D-Square Ltd is an injection moulding company that provides services in a wide range of plastic materials from its 1,700 m2 factory in Paola, Malta. The company brings over 30 years of experience and serves a diverse client base that includes the automotive industry, cosmetics packaging, toys and electronics manufacturing.

Headed by CEO and founder Alex Sciberras, D-Square Ltd employs around 30 highly skilled workers and operates 24 injection moulding machines.

D-Square Ltd was one of STEP’s first clients; we began working together to prepare their team for ISO 9001 certification in 2013. Back then, the company operated from a garage factory and had a smaller workforce.

Like many business owners—and founders in particular — it was always Mr Sciberras’ goal to see his company grow and achieve better results.

He considered a quality management (QM) certification like ISO 9001 to be essential to enable D-Square to sustainably improve operations, increase the level of service, and generally be more competitive in the injection moulding sector.


In order to achieve this target, D-Square needed a partner that would guide them through the certification process, and work hand-in-hand with management and staff to identify the main challenges they will have to overcome and prepare for the new opportunities ahead.

The team at STEP fulfilled this role by applying its knowledge in management systems and a hands-on approach to helping companies achieving certification success.

We began the process by gaining a deeper understanding of the structures and practices that defined the organisation prior to certification, documenting each step of the way and using our findings to draw up a holistic plan that could be implemented to address the company’s requirements for ISO 9001 qualification. The culmination of this plan was an extensive auditing process carried out by STEP, in preparation for the final audit.


D-Square Ltd was able to apply and receive ISO certification in 11 months through the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA), after passing the external audit with flying colours.

In describing how obtaining ISO 9001 certification with STEP changed the way D-Square operates, Mr Sciberras highlights, “the benefits of implementing a management system, is that now I can monitor how we have consistently reached the customer’s targets”. 

The company is now looking towards continued sustainable growth by certifying its commitment to a high standard of environmental management through the implementation of ISO 14001.
